Looking for something to do during the month? Here’s a few National Month observations (available at https://www.nationaldaycalendar.com)

National Military Appreciation Month

Declared by Congress in 1999, May was selected National Military Appreciation Month as a month-long observance honoring the sacrifices of the United States Armed Forces. There are more military related observances during the month of May than any other SSgt Chevron Sketchmonth, so it is an appropriate time to celebrate the men and women in uniform. During May, we recognize Loyalty Day, VE Day (the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945), Armed Forces Day, Military Spouses Day and Memorial Day.

It is a month to honor those who are serving and those who have served.

Thank you to our veterans and current military team mates. Your service does not go unappreciated, and I personally value the blanket of safety your sacrifices (and your family’s) provide.

National Get Caught Reading Month

It’s simple – get caught reading. However, the campaign doesn’t stop there. It encourages a life-long enjoyment of reading. Kick back with an article, book, magazine you enjoy and read.

Here are some great tips to be prepared to read all month long.

Tuck magazines into your bag. Anytime you have some free time you will have something to read.

Place books for all ages in the car. Everyone will have something to read. Older children can read to those who haven’t mastered the skill.

Unplug for the month. Then stop by the library and pick out the latest bestseller or classic on your reading list.

Charge up the digital reader’s battery and load it up. Many classics have been made available for a small fee or no cost.

Get caught reading to children. Find a snug spot and create a routine that carries on throughout the year.

Include a book in every room in the house.

Encourage reading during stressful times as a way to distract the mind away from worries and to refocus.

Read outdoors in a park after a walk

I’m currently reading The Stand by Stephen King, and re-reading Principle Centered Leadership by Stephen Covey.

Correct Your Posture Month

Correct Your Posture Month encourages us to consciously think about the way we align our bodies during the different activities we perform every day.

Poor posture affects our long-term health. Over time, poor posture causes bone and joint issues that places our quality of life at risk. From pain and discomfort to other health issues caused by medication use, slouching can be the ground zero issue that if remedied early can save a lot of agony later.

Like many small concerns that snowball later in life, poor posture can lead debilitating headaches, injury, circulatory issues, and more.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Good posture comes with practice.

It’s important to stretch and move every 30 minutes if you work at a desk.

Strengthen your core muscles.

Work on your balance and take the stairs.

Check your ergonomics. Are you able to reach the floor easily in your chair? Is your keyboard too high or too low?
